depends on the strain, the humidity, the age of the plant, how much the plants are disturbed with movement or fanning, how frequently they are watered, the tempreture..... in other words, it can yes but it depends. carbon filters are a good cheap way to deal with it if smell is an issue.

I like to think of it as 'aroma' or 'fragrance' ... ahhhhhhh :p
yeah, my first grow had 2 girls, one was skunky the other was fruity, and boy could you smell the skunk!!
Now on the second grow we really did not have much fragrance at all, and the meds where quite good when finished.... so for me it has been the strain of the MMJ that gave me aroma....
How's that the image reaper...LOL... i used your adjectives in my post... :):)

Growing in soil or using organic fertilizers indoors can result in unpleasant odors with any kind of plant.
This is the reason I do soilless hydro and only use mineral or inorganic chemical ferts indoors.
I also use oxygenated Teas that are completely fertmented/composted out before being used in the indoor garden, as a carb free organic booster, but this takes 3 days to 2 weeks to make depending on what you use in the Tea mix. I use two deacaf. (Celestial Seasonings) tea bags per gallon and half to 3/4 cup Molasses per five gallon batch plus Beer/Wine yeast. Finishing time depends on the size of the yeast innoculation and the temperature. Indoors an air lock type scrubber with Hydrogen Peroxide/Activated Carbon is use to deal with bubbled ferment odors, but the output has extra CO2 for the garden.

one plant or a thousand.. smell is the #2 reason people get busted.
good growing.. CM
I agree with Carpet Muncher, smell has caused many a bust.
One thing, that I have noticed, is that I tend to get use to the smell of my plants because I spend so much time with them. On more than one occassion my wife has come home only to inform me that she could smell my plants in our driveway which is a long way from my grow. So I guess there is a warning there for some people. Remember, just because you do not notice the smell does not mean that others can not smell your grow!

I found that tons of fresh air in and then out really helps. I think of if like a fart in a whirlwind. You do get use to the smell...

When I walk into my house, the smell of fresh cannabis is overwhelming. And you know what -- I don't give a damn. Anyone who can't deal with it can leave.
Yes, Having some kind of legal status is definately helpful and simplifies the amounts of work you must do to hide stuff. Thank God for Oregon.

well i'm sure that the smell would not bother me, but as most of you said smell usually leads to a bust. and since i'm living with another person who doesn't know that i'm growing, that could be a problem.
if i used some kind of air freshener, would that hurt the plants in any way?
also, can the smell go down to a floor below, or does it rise like smoke?

Yeeouch, that’s gonna be very tough.
Any odor that escapes the grow is gonna move with the air. Really there are 2 ways to go about controlling odor; filter the air inside the growspace or pull air through the grow and clean it and exhaust it.
You have to balance the need for odor control with the plants need for fresh air or supplemental carbon.
In your situation is sounds like an indoor grow will be hard to hide… Can you grow outside?
An air freshener is not gonna hurt the plants and if you choose to pull air through the grow you can move it in anyway you wish, up down or sideways…

My house smells of dead hookers and socks, so the grow is not noticed thankfully

Yea Nogoodnamesleft! I make sure never to clean the cat box, puke always stays on the floor and we encourage the hound dogs to bring all their "kill" inside for a few weeks. I don't really notice any "plant" smell.......

As far as dealling with odors rather than identifying sources, a Activated Carbon and/or Zeolite scrubber is always the best answer.
Scrubbers can be closed loop to deodorize the growing area, or open loop which is usually used to deodorize exhausting airflow.

are those expensive?
does it make a difference if the room isn't completely closed off, i.e. there might be some small openings in it

Small openings ar no good when you are flowering. It has to be completly closed. Just thought I would add this before you run into trouble.

yes, they are pretty expensive to buy premade, but can be made for a fraction of the cost.. esp if you sub crystal cat litter.
if you exhaust to the attic, you create a negative pressure in the room and no odor will escape.. i have the door to my room wide open.
another way to do it is to recirc, but in my experience the air in the room has to be turned 50/100? times an hour to keep the smell contained.. (an 8" fan and scrubber didn't handle a 10x10x8 room) ..at least with stinky strains.

Sorry littlewing, just gets a little aggravating answering the same question over and over when a little effort on your part using the search feature or reading in the forums would yield a ton of info on most every question you might have.
“does growing indoors (especially in a small place) produce a very noticeable smell?”
Yes. Period. You can’t get around it, you can only control it.
That being said, you can pick up a carbon filter for around $100 or you can built one that will work just as well for less than $50
“does it make a difference if the room isn't completely closed off, i.e. there might be some small openings in it”
Your room will have to have vents. Plants breathe the air and they will deplete the co2 in the room quickly, so it must be replaced. As suggested above, you use “negative pressure (vacuum)” to pull air IN through the vents;
A). So the smell does not get out and,
B). So the plants get fresh air
You then route the cleaned, smell free exhaust wherever you wish, note than it will be warm
Your biggest problem in a small place will be heat, the above solution will fix that problem also, assuming that you would use flouro’s. If you wish to use HID, then you’ve got a whole nuther issue.

For smell i just use those ONA blocks Or you can get the gel and place them in each side of the grow room and this really helps with the smell IMO .Just my 2 cents;)
