The Buddha and his Teachings by Narada Maha Thera,

The second edition published by The Singapore Meditation Centre (1973) and distributed free by Buddha Educational Foundation of Taiwan. This book was a gift from the Venerable Santitthito and recommended because he considered it a basic introductory text for Westerners. Narada was a prominent Theravadin teacher and missioner who travelled and taught in Europe. Santi heard him speak in Hamburg before he set out on his wanderings that we lead to him taking ordination. This book tells the inspiring story of the historic Buddha and clearly explains Buddhist concepts such as karma, Nibbana, moral responsibility, the Bodhisattva ideal and so on.

Two good texts for beginners in the sacred path:

Shambhala The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa
The Rumi Collection Edited by Kabir Helminski

Both available through Shambhala Library

excellent stuff! I'm a zen buddhist myself. I've read many of the works you mention. Many recent translations of the Dhammapada with commentary are excellent as well.
