The SPCA rescued an eight-week-old German shepherd Sunday from a Port Coquitlam home containing a large marijuana grow operation.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals pulled the pup from a Citadel Heights house after police found 1,709 pot plants inside — one of the largest grow ops ever discovered in the city.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Dave Babineau said the two-storey, 2,600-square foot house had been used exclusively for harvesting pot in three basement grow rooms and two clone rooms in the bedrooms. An electrical bypass was allegedly found in the garage.

The Marijuana Enforcement Team also seized a variety of growing equipment from the house, Babineau said.

A 37-year-old Vancouver resident who was in the home was arrested and faces charges of cultivation of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking, theft of hydro and mischief.

The Security Resource Group — made up of retired police officers — was recruited to help dismantle the grow op.

PoCo Fire/Rescue also vented the home to make it safe for police and city bylaw officers.
