It can get real cold in winter down there - in basement , if heat registers are kept closed. In all seasons I get cold intolerance. But, in winter the pain from this cold is starting to bother me more.. gets worse with each passing winter. Would it be a practical thing to consider using HID lighting in the basement to help heat the basement in the winter along with having as its primary purpose to bloom me a grow!  I guess I'd like a 400 wat veg light and a 600 bloom light each. what could I expect to pay for these 2 hid lights with complete lighting system? I expect to veg 10 and keep 10 in bloom simul.:)

Basically, the heat from the HIDs should be efficiently spread around by your ventilation system and then filter up through the house. The smartest bet, energy-wise, is to grow indoors during the winter heavily, only lightly or not at all in the spring/summer, and if possible, outdoor in the summer/fall :-)

Electric prices can be more stable than oil and many other common home heating sources, so you might as well harness the excess heat from your growing by not ventilating it outside!

Also put your ballests in a den or bedroom as, they give off heat also. They should be able to keep one of these room heated and this will save you on heating that room and you can just close off the heat duct going to that room.

My light saved me around $30 a month last winter on my light bill as I heat with electricity.

what is the average cost in growing four to six plants using DWC?really depends on alot of factor #1 lighing and type of nutes you can do one to two grows from quart sized nutes off the top of my head if i remember right was about 50 for the nutes i run a 400 watt hps and it cost me about 30-50 a month to run ... btw i also vent the cool tube into my room during the winter and keeps my room nice and toasty during the cold winter nites ;)

a Electricity Contract for 3 to 5 years???

Ontario is scheduled to phase out electricity produced by coal by the end of 2009. Solar costs about 43 cents/kwh and wind is about 11 cents/kwh. these are prolly the alternatives to the coal, which is prolly 4 cents. I would think that things may stay even for about the next 12 to 18 months.. and then it could take off, ( at the retail level ) anticipating the coal end announcements. What do u think people. I just signed a 3 yr. deal but I have 14 days to change my mind. I have been using energy contracts for about the past 5 years....but things are different right now/ feel free to comment on how you think energy prices ( electricity ) are headed.

in Ontario for Direct Energy I ask you this........does the price of anything ever go down....in the long run? Of course not. You may see little drops once in a while, but all in all, everything eventually goes up in price. If you could be guaranteed that milk and bread would be set at a "locked in price for the next 5 years"....would you go for it? I have signed up both my parents and Pothead Sabby has also signed up her parents in the past. I remember signing up people for 5 years and after a year or 2 the savings start to kick in. It is a good thing as you can plan your payments based on actual usage....and not be shocked to see that your rates have risen unexplicably the past month or two. Go for it...as long as you do not re-sign your rates are guaranteed for the duration of the contract. People were getting duped by unscrupulous agents in the past, so they could get their commissions. Once you re-sign your rates are adjusted to your new contract...thus nullifying your previous contract. Make sure your term is up before re-signing anything...no matter what the agent may tell you. That is the problem with gas and hydro marketers....they get paid by commission mostly...so the more new contracts they submit...the bigger their paychecks. Make sure you call the supplier and ask what your current rates are and what the new rate would be if the new contract is accepted before the 14 day cutoff period. Did I mention I made over $1,000 a day some days doing this type of work? I was considered to be a "God" amongst my peers. They wondered how if they were making a $100 a day, could I be coming in with all these deals? You must be sure and explain every aspect to the consumer so that they are sure they made the right choice. In a nutshell, if you have an existing contract...DO NOT RE-SIGN...as this would more than likely nullify your lower rates. If your contract is near expiration....get on the bandwagon for more SAVINGS!!!

On Natural Gas, I locked in for 5 years and still have 3.5 years to go on it. so that is quite good.

On the Electricity, I just called them and asked when does the new price kick in. They said....right away. becuz it is an "early renewal". therefore, they are gonna charge the higher price now...10 months before my current contract will expire. So based on that alone... I told him to cancel it immediately ( the early renewal ).

I will use the remaining 10 months to shop for a new electricity supplier. thanks pothead pete for your advise about the new higher rate kicking in before my old one expires. I would have been unneccessarily paying 50% more for at least 10 months. However, for me the electricity in the winter is very minimal as we use gas to heat the house. IN summer I have higher electric bill because I use a/c.
