Hi all, I have a lady friend in her early 70s, she has chronic pain from osteo-arthritis ... she wants to try medical mj for the pain ... however she is afraid that it will interact with the drugs she is taking for her heart ... she has a pig valve in her heart and takes some kinda anti rejection stuff and some drug to slow her heart rate. Do you think she could venture a try at mj?? She lives in Florida and is scared to ask her doctor about it, he treats her like a stupid old lady.

Yeah, mentioning MJ to one's doctor in most states is a pointless exercise and will only cause trouble.
MJ does tend to accelerate the heart rate and could therefore be somewhat risky, especially in medicinally effective doses, for your lady friend.
A gentle, pure Indica medicinal strain, used orally in low doses and/or in very low doses with a vaporizer, could work. I certainly know from experience that arthritis is incredibly painful. And MJ can help at least as well as any addictive opiate can, if not moreso.

I'd be carefull in recomending MMJ to a patient like that. Smoked MMJ is definatly a no no and the mild tachycardia assiciated with cannibis ingestion sounds like it might be a direct contraindication to her current condition in that she's taking a med (probably digoxin but stil wouldn;t want t oguess) to slow down her heart rate.
I'd get with a trusted cardiologist who knows something about pot. A pharmacist might be able to help but probably would just say no to pot under any circumstances.
Good luck. If she does start with pot tell her to take it realy slow and ot consult qualified medical professionals prior to starting.

I know a person (very well) in their mid 70's that has had the pig ear replacement and takes the drugs that go with this situation.
The person consumes hemp hearts daily and consumes small amounts of indica strain cannabis in baked cookies as needed to aid in relaxation and sleep.
I am not recommending the person mentioned in this thread do the same, just posting for information proposes is all.

this lady lives in Florida and the doctors there tend to frown on even discussing cannabis .... let only talk to this old gal about it.... its a shame ... I will relay what you have all said and let her make own mind up.

I don't mean to overlook the original point that it is shaky ground to talk to a doctor in florida about MMJ, but in the case of a heart patient, smoking is a very big no no, and even consuming cannabis orally still raises your heart rate. Not only that, but we, patients, shouldn't be making suggestions, of what kind of cannabis to consume, or quatities. We are not the doctors, and there is a good reason why only medical doctors, and not just your psychiatrist can perscribe you MMJ.
If she is certain that MMJ will be right for her, she should make the trip to see a real medical doctor.
I don't mean in any way to insult anyone's knowledge of cannabis, and how it should be perscribed, but it is only rational for your friend to see a doctor before trying on a whim of what patients with other illnesses use cannabis for.

sam is right----only thing i would try is a small dose of a pure indica. I have 6 years in the medical field but still it is agienst the law to give advise to a patient without a doctors consent. You will get fired for it period.:(

Speaking for myself here...I had a heat attack 4 years ago and have been smoking, vaping and eating pot.
The hardest thing on your heart is digesting a meal. I don't know of any interactions with mmj. I have searched far and wide for any interactions and could not find any. I tak 14 perscriptions a day.

I too had a heart attack dykster. Although my heart attack was back in 2000. Sadly the pharmaceutical lipitor has caused my muscle tissues much damage to the point I have been disabled unable to return to my 19+ year job.
30 plus years of consuming cannabis did no where near the harm pharmaceuticals have caused me in a very short time in comparison.
I vap and eat cannabis, with out it I would spend 90% of my time bed ridden. I actually have a huge increase in quality of live with the right cannabis.
This is one of the reasons I am so willing to be a public pro cannabis activist.
I have to agree with you samannac!

"how it should be perscribed" (prescribed)
Like I said "I am not recommending the person mentioned in this thread do the same, just posting for information proposes is all."

I hear ya there Keith! Actually it was a heart attack not a heat attack as I posted....lol.
I vape, eat and on special occasions break out the large glass bong. Stress is one of the causes of heart problems. i just try to stay chillin... When I started my mmj life, I email Dr. Jay and had nice emails back with all my questions answered. It's sad we cannot talk openly to our own Docs.

Cannabis and immunosupressant anti-rejection medications?
Some of the advice given could kill this elderly women with a transplant.
If you are reading this, you have Google at your fingertips. It might be a good idea to educate oneself before killing an women with a mitral valve replacement on anti rejection drugs.
MJ and those drugs - condition can kill. As can good intentions.

lowers her blood pressure alot.form 220's down to 112.
Same here, I was 140 over 90 without vapping cannabis. Vap cannabis and I am 120 to 130 over 70 which is normal for me so my doc told me anyway.
