Sweet. I can almost imagine covering an event again. I miss that part of my old job. Going to vegas for Comdex, CES or NAb and getting treated like sombody (at least by the PR people) was a real kick. I'd be all dressed up business style and feeling more like I was playing a roll as sombody else rather than as just good old me.
I just checked the California Highway Patrol (also serves as ca state police) website and to my dismay they have canceled their Press Pass/ID program. Other states and lew enforcement agencies still issue them and it may be to your advantage to obtain one.
In my experience press passes will usually only get you into events that are expecting you, making it difficult to abuse. In my days at another magazine we use to get duplicate crediantials so we could get our sales staff into events that were technically for press only but that was at the direction of our managing editor.
Being a member of the press at events calls for us to maintain a certian level of professionalism. We will not only be representing TY, Marco and the TY community but also the press as well. It would be a bummer to get a whole segment of small publishers banned from events which is already an issue at larger trade shows. They tend to focus on the large media outlets giving them priority over small niche publishers.
There are laws and codes of ethics that members of the press are required to adhear to in many states. This may include the solicitation of payola (goods or services of value in exchange for editorial favor) and misrepresentation (using your press pass to get into an even you are not assigned to) which can lead to civil and/or criminal charges.
Thanks for placing the level of trust in us Marco!
