 I am currently building a charcoal filter for odor control and have run into a considerable roadblock...I've searched pet stores and ebay, trying to locate an inexpensive (read cheap) outlet for activated charcoal. It appears that I will have to spend nearly  $50  for the proper amount to fit my 5 gal. filter...there has to be someplace that sells it for less...any suggestions? TYIA

Kitty litter for multiple cat house holds. It will not last as long (i.e., you will have to replace it a little more often) but it is way cheaper than charcoal.

How much is bail, fines, lawyer and jail time gonna cost ya?!?!?!

That seems to make that 50.00 a paltry sum doesn't it spend the money for the charcoal....

I suggest trying to find a supplier who deals in larger quantities. Depending on where you live, there should be some sort of business (like the one linked below) that serves your local area's agricultural, industrial, and/or business needs for activated carbon. Coco-based carbon comes from a renewable biological by-product by the way, as compared to coal-based which comes from, well, coal.

You could always order from someplace online if you don't mind the shipping expense or using all that fossil fuel to ship something that heavy.

I'm too new to the site to post a web address so just do a search for "Carbon Activated Corp." and you should find their web site. They're in Compton, CA, USA. They're just an example, though. There should be industrial carbon suppliers all over the place; the stuff is used in a huge variety of applications.

You have to be very careful buying activated charcoal for gaseous use as it not what is used in water filtration, in fact you might as well use bar-q charcoal

I have been involved with the stuff for years and believe me, an individual person cannot purchase the stuff in small enough quantities to even get a price off one of the (very) few suppliers of gaseous filtration carbon

The "problem" is the particle shape for water is spherical, for gas it's linear ...

I can only assume you guys haven't heard of 'Phat fliters' out of NZ, they guarantee their units for 2 yrs and they're still the cheapest on the market ... just checked their website, available world wide

If you live in Europe or the UK the place to go is Greens Horticulture .... the Phat units are incredibly well made and are the only ones I would advise anyone to get

Gas filtration by activated carbon is not simple ..... and ventilation is second only to genetics

The activated charcoal supplier I suggested recommends the 4mm linear pellets. That's what we've been using and it works great and supports your "linear" principle. This is what they suggested for gaseous filtration. Thanks for the input!

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions, I have gone with a mix of charcoal and kitty litter and it seems to be working well, my wife can't smell it througout the house like she could and even the room itself is odor free. Thank you all!!

Sorry about that...I must have posted it in another thread. I deal with a guy there named Omitha (first name). He's very helpful.

the stuff may seem expensive, but it lasts a fair while.
i got a 50lb bag when i bough my charcoal blower unit and at that time it was worth $150, 2 years later i still have a 3/4 full bag.

Last time I bought it, it was around $100 for 55lbs. Not bad at all. That enough for 3 complete filters.

Activated charcoal is not an expense...

150.00 is nothing compared to what it will cost you if you don't have odor control......

Think about it, if your not using odor control the best thing that can happen to you is you get busted......

The worst thing that can happen is you get robbed and maybe shot for your green gold.........
