Everyone knows the natural high of being lucky enough to find the animal that fits their idea of perfection. We had decided that for our daughter's 1990 Christmas present we'd give in a get her a much wanted dog. It took us on a journey that had us seeing hundreds of dogs. We initially wanted to find a dog from a shelter however none seemed to fit our criteria so we broadened our horizons to the classified ads, then to just about anywhere. On Dec. 22 it seemed that there was no hope until one of those times when something made me go to a little known pet store.
I normally shied away from pet stores in general other than checking out the breeds - it was the prices being charged that were horrendous (of course nowadays they've quadrupled in price).
I walked into to this store and in the cage at the centre back there were some dogs however I only noticed one - she was jumping up and using her adorable little self to get my attention. The saleslady noticed my reaction to her and before I knew it I had this wonderful ball of fluff in my arms and she was female - one of our preferences. It was love at first site and I couldn't believe that I was actually considering paying $400 (reduced because it was the 22nd) for a pure bred Pomeranian. I had never wanted to spend that on a dog especially when money was tight.
It turned out to be the best decision that I've made to date and the best $400 I've ever spent. From day one she was always a fun loving, warm, incredibly intelligent, happy and loving member of our family. Never once in all her life did she ever snap at anyone - she didn't have a mean bone in her body.
My Dad came to live with us in '92 until '03 and had a constant companion in her - the dog was a great conversation piece and pretty soon everyone in our neighbourhood knew them both. We also have a day school nearby and all the children got to know her. She was always a gentle dog but somehow around young children she was even gentler with them. Teachers have told me that returning students ask after her first. My father & mother-iin-law would order their meals accordng to what they thought the dog's taste might me that day. She lost 2 of her best friends when they both died within the past two years and I think she felt it intuitively and though she was a sweetheart to the last I belive she really missed them both as much as we did.
She loved to go for walks - I'd get to the park and take her leash off letting her sniff around a bit while I contiuned ahead - then I'd call & just like those commercials this furball came bounding towards me - we used to play hide & seek with her and the trees - she loved to go for rides on the baby swings - you could just slip her into the seat - the water fountain was a favorite at the park too. She loved the snow and would always make roly-polys in it (like our version of angels). She loved to drive in the car with her head out the window with the breeze running through her fur. She loved everyone she met and everyone she met loved her too. No one could ask for more than to have had the pleasure of enjoying such a truly beautiful life.
I only hope she's running around now like she used to with my Dad waiting to take care of her again.
