I read your post and laughed becuase of what happened to me when I first bought a plug in type ph meter. I tested the pail of water and the meter read 7.7. so I added ph down and tested it again, still 7.7, then I realized there was a cap on the probe end that keeps it wet while in storage. duh. I have used both portable and fixed and I like the fixed ones better as they can continue to monitor allowing you to see the changes over time with different nute products. some will go from 5.6 to 8 in one day, and thats not one you want to use in hydro, nute that is.

I use a "wand" meter called a "Truncheon". It uses LED lights in a row.
It's really easy to read and I have a trick for it. I take a wide yellow rubber band and place it around the meter at the LED that represents the EC I'm shooting for.
So when I walk around and check the reservoirs, I just dip the Truncheon (it's 2.5 feet long) and look to see If the LED where the yellow band is.
After a few times it's easy to to know what the EC is WITHOUT actually reading any numbers.....
just by knowing how far the LED that is lit is from the yellow band.
Since the LED's are very bright it can be done in the dark.
The reason I mention is that if no one has meter for sale .. buy one of these pro tools. I paid $89 usd for the last one I bought. I won't need another one they last forever and are very tough...and no calibration needed. It's well worth the extra $40 over a non waterproof meter that won't hold up.

I think we both found out you get what you pay for and it wasn't much.
I got one of these checker 1 units in the box holding a door open and it works well only for that so it wasn't a complete loss ! lol
