If I could change anything about Quesnel, it would be the drug problem that exists amongst our youth, which destroys the fabric of society.

It ruins schools, families, and respect. I know of students who participate in hard-core drugs and it hurts everybody around them. The best way to change this atmosphere is prevention, rehabilitation, and punishment.

Two youth I know are actually out of school and I have seen the heightened depravity of their actions. I have contacted them and they are down south, both thinking that drugs like marijuana is “just weed.”

The effect these youth have on society itself is like a cancer that spreads. After seeing them, I see some of the immorality of youth in society. The day after the school dance I heard students were high on ecstasy, marijuana, and some were drunk. The fact these students were saying this out in the open for everyone to hear was disturbing. There are absolutely no social consequences to them by the student body. The student body seems not to care about the bad apples; they just let it fester.

The only way to change the use of drugs among our youth is through prevention, intervention, and punishment.

For prevention, schools need to be more involved with children. All students need to be in two mandatory extra-curricular activities and could include: theater, sports, chess club, or even leadership. The main concept is to get kids active and not have them have too much free time. The D.A.R.E. and Party programs are not offered to all students and they need to be to help them deal with peer pressure.

Intervention is important. When it becomes apparent a child is on drugs, then a principal, parent, RCMP officer, and drug user need to sit down and talk about the real life consequences.

When talking stops working, the school needs to show their authority. I think two weeks of 7:15 a.m. detentions for users should be mandatory and sellers should be expelled.

Drugs truly are Quesnel’s worst problem and one I would like to see change. It would give children a new chance at something better, so they can succeed in life.

David Gill is a Grade 12 student in Writing 12 at Correlieu secondary.

 David Gill is on his way to being a bible thumping Conservative.
I agree there is a drug abuse problem among the youth, but this approach Mr. Gill talks about has been done to almost every generation before him and to no avail. Face the facts, people will always use and or abuse drugs, always have and always will, since the begining of time. We need to educate the youth so they can make an informed decision on what drug they're going to experiment with,if any. Trying to control them and punish them will only make things worse for everybody.::p :p

Funny no mention of Mom and Dads Big Pharmacy cupboard full of entry level drugs.

Cannabis before alcohol LOL ya right there is a Liquor store on ever corner and like my brother the beer fridge is always full. Cheers!

Notice the article never gives an example of the problems caused by this rampant drug use, and the only evidence she had that the problem was bad is gossip. The authors' problem seems to be with the very use of drugs( drugs are bad mmm'kay). You can tell it was written by soebody that believes themselves to be the moral protector of us all and our children. How is society torn apart by drugs? The drug that affects humanity in the most negative way " alcohol" is legal and widely used. If society can handle alcohol, it can take anything.

a russian guy was stabbed in the back by a friend when drinking and has no ill will towards his friend because he said, "they were drinking and anything can happen when your drinking." This brainwashed little moron needs to do some objective learning before he writes more garbage for other brainwashed morons to use for reference when demonizing drug users. I wonder if this guy drinks coffee or pop or energy drinks or takes sleeping pills or tylenol or asprin or any other substance with "drug" in it. by the way, what happened at this dance he referred to? There must have been some real disaster

i read the article again and, you guys, he's right. drugs are the problem. don't you see it people. see what the drugs are doing and nobody is doing anything about it. well maybe us responsible and morally superior people will take care of this nasty disease. i mean, right now, kids are getting high and as a result are becoming hungry, laughing, and getting along. we can't have that. they need to see that what they are doing is harming themselves and everyone around them. i am crying as i'm writing this because i am being affected. your affective me drug user. i don't like drugs and i think they are bad and your bad for doing them. stuff happens and i heard once that a dude smoked a "doobie " his head exploded. good. maybe he wont do drugs anymore. hahahahahahahahahaha

When I attended high school most of the "TEENAGERS" (not children) that "heard" about the dances were at home crying themselves to sleep. David, when and if you attend college or university add "abstinance" to your "prevention, rehabilitation and enforcement" speaches because you won't be get'n any.
