Hi all,
This may seem stupid, and I am not afraid to appear that way so will still ask, but I use mainly wooden pipes. When I clean them a hash like tar builds up around the inside rim. What is this? Is this safe to smoke? I noticed most people here use glass pipes, are these better? I can't be bothered with the bong.
Also, I have used a filter when rolling a joint. Does anyone know what this 'filters' out?
many thanks!

There is never a a silly question.
Glass pipes seem to be used more often and are easily and cheaply cleaned with kosher sea salt and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
Gummed up wooden pipe I would toss as you can never get them clean.
Most Canadians I know ,and have had the privilege to medicate with use filters on their rollies. It is more so the end of the J not be a soggy mess.
One option you might enjoy is a one-hitter. They look like class cigs in form.
Good medication, I hope I was of some help.
When in doubt use the TY search function, go into advanced search for more defined searching.

When utilizing wood pipes, building up a "cake" as its called is proper.
Wood pipes are NOT like glass pipes! You're not supposed to take all the cake off, only the excess (so you don't clog the pipe). By having a cake built up, it "seals" the wood so you don't smoke the wood. A properly caked pipe will also add much flavour if done properly.
It also helps to blow into the pipe from the mouthpiece when you're done smoking to push the resin out of the stem.
As far as smoking the resin, you can, although its really gross! lol
There are apparently cannabinoids left over, but how much I don't know. Smoking resin has gotten me by in a pinch, but its far from ideal medicine! I have spread the resin on papers and made joints that way, much like you would with cannabis oil.
As far as using filters, do you mean like a cigarette filter? I use rolled up piece of cardboard for my "filter". Its more to prevent the joint from gumming up at the end and getting clogged up or wet from saliva. The cardboard keeps the end of the joint open, and depending on how you make it, will keep you from inhaling pieces of pot. Just cut up a small rectangular strip of cardboard or thick paper (like from your pack of papers), roll it up so it "springs" out like a coil, and with it rolled up tight, insert it into your rolled joint (it helps to prepare the end hole first, like take something and push the pot in so theres room for the cardboard piece).
Hope this helps.

We use the filters in our rollies. It doesn't effect potency and seems to ease the effect on throat and lungs.
A person I do for taught me to roll some of his supply for him in the extra long papers (110), putting a short filter at each end. That is then rolled and sealed in a foil wrap to stay fresh. Then when he has company and needs to medicate, he simply cuts this in half, handling the visitor their own and yet still sharing. This is much more sanitary and lessens the chance of illness for both friend and patient as well as a pleasant way to enjoy the yummy but messy heavily resined strains. The foil serves as stow packaging if all is not consumed at once.

Hey SN that is a sort of novel approach...one I had not seen before, an interesting way to share a spliff...with a filter already in both ends! now that's thinking ahead.
I recently discovered the joys of extra long papers, . it allows me to roll longer thinner spliffs and is easier to fit a filter in.
I wonder if there is any filter product that is designed for a spliff and that actually can remove harmful stuff while at the same time letting the good stuff through?

Ok solar, so I get that part, I have some more for you now.....
Should I wash my pipe? I noticed several people wash with warm soapy water? is this for glass, I couldn't see it helping. I just use pipe cleaners and a swiss penknife. That has been good enough, I think. I usually clean and replace filter as soon as it needs it, is that cool?
I also really like the idea about the long papers and two joints! I often go to rallys and this would be an ideal thing to bring! Everyone else can have one and so can I. I often find I roll it, pass it and need to roll another - that by then should be passed around really.....these I can pre-roll, put in my sunglass case and ride. Liken it!
Once again,
Thanks Guys!!

A couple of questions ...
Do you notice any loss of potency when smoking through a filter ?
Do you ever have a problem with the heavily resined strains gumming up the filters ?

i did cut the filter after they were rool .just keeping 1/8 of an inch and that was nice//i did stop asking my wife to roll with that machine .donnow why .but i did like it .but just stop doing that .now i have to find that small machine again .it is in a box store somewhere in the basement .after reading this tread i have to find it and use it again /that was fast to roll and store in a package of cigarette did really look just like a normal cigarette ..exept for the smell .lol.i have to dig up that machine and try it again .....thank for juggling my memory .i had forgot about it .....peace ...7...:)

Nope, no difference in potency, the filter catches the particulates but lets the active ingredients thru. You do notice a smoother smoke and a deeper strain flavor. Not as nice as a vape tho.
No, not anymore than a non filtered. Even if you are adding oil or kief as well. Since you don't re use them it's not a problem. Also, there is a company that makes hemp fiber for use as a filter. I have tried it and it is really great. I haven't found that in my area yet so still use the white foam-looking ones.
OK, you know how things can get gooky and gummy with a heavy-resined joint towards the end? It's still smokeable, just real nasty. Having it shorter solves this whether filtered or not. Plus you get to enjoy that 1st clean hit twice as often, LOL.
Since I was shown this I now use a cigarette-size glass one hitter; make up a nice and fat cigarette size rollie (this is where the rolling contraptions are handy for sizing), cut in half or thirds and smoke 1 part at a time. You can do them up ahead, wrap and seal in foil. When you cut it in half, the foil usually pinches down and seals on the remaining half, keeping it fresh.
Like alot of women, I have always hated dealing with the final tiny little bit of a joint. Side smoke rolls up in your eyes and nose, it's hard to hold and gets dropped, often burning your clothes and furniture, it's just icky, especially with other people's spit on it. BUT don't want to waste of course. This one hitter method solves that problem for me. I have the inexpensive extras I keep clean for friends to use and then keep if they want to. Your foil package comes in handy here too. Just slide the joint out to near the end, cut the closed end off and pinch the foil edge (long ways) on the joint to hold and seal it so it will draw. Tah Dah! now you have a little holder!
I am squeamish about "swapping spit" with people other than my hubby and have enough health problems already.

I heard tale that the use of alcohol in glass some how weakens it, that just didn't exactly make sense to me though. I like to use the wintergreen alcohol personally as well with the sea salt.

I personally very rarely smoke a joint without a cigarette-type filter anymore, when I don't I use a "crutch" - a piece of cardboard made especially for that purpose.
I really find no difference in potency - if anything, because the smoke is filtered, you can take bigger hits without irritating your lungs as much.
For me, there's just too many benfits in using a filter - mostly mentioned above.
Also, after smoking a joint and looking at all the tar and crap in the filter afterwards, I find it hard to not use them! :p
As for your wooden pipe question, you can get some that have disposable charcoal filters inside them, reducing the need to clean so regularly and providing excellent filtration.
I have had excellent results using alcohol (isoprpyl is best, often available at the chemist) and rice for cleaning glass bongs. Methylated spirits or other alcohol and be used in a pinch...

Hey, check this out for a general idea of how to care and smoke a wood pipe:

Its for MacQueen Pipes, but its applicable to all pipes IMO.
