Police stop 'pretty unusual' for marijuana exemptee

Posted By By Brian Kelly, The Sault Star

Derek Pedro's first trip to Hempfest (http://www.treatingyourself.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=29583) was a "nerve wracking" one.

He says Ontario Provincial Police asked him and Alison Myrden, both federal medical marijuana exemptees, to get out of their truck during a spot check Wednesday.

Their supply of marijuana was weighed.

"It was pretty unusual," Pedro said Sunday at Hempfest.

"To weigh medicine, I've never heard of that."

He and Myrden waited about 45 minutes before being cleared to go.

"It was nerve wracking. You're talking to somebody that's had quite a few experiences, unfortunately, with the law and medical marijuana," he said.

"I just want to be left alone just like anyone else that's sick. But yet wherever I go I'm asked, 'What is it that you have?'"

"It's a little intrusive, but at the same time I want to defend my position so I have to talk about it."

The self-employed handyman has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. It's a rare genetic disorder that has caused him migranes, joint pain and operations on his knees and shoulders.

He started taking pain medication when he was 14. Pedro was taking 400 Percocet pills a month before he started smoking marijuana in 2004.

"We're exempt from the law, but yet we're persecuted on a daily basis," said Pedro.

"We're sick, but yet we still have to endure stresses — stresses that the average person with a regular prescription doesn't have to go through."

The police check won't stop him from attending Hempfest in 2009.

Way to go D & A in educating these Northern Ontario Cowboys!

This sort of behaviour by the police will not STOP not until we are able to LEGALIZE.

So sorry that folks had to endure this type of behaviour by the O.P.P. yet again.

Take Care and Peace
Marco

This again is just the tip of the iceburg.
They use weed as an excuse to stop and search.
It won't be long till they will not need any excuse at all.
Set up a road block on any ole highway they feel like and check every persons vehicle..
"Oh but this is all for your own security," they will tell us.

The missing medical mj needs to be addressed as I believe it will be. Another member had his meds taken from him as he had forgotten his ticket back at camp. The police seized the meds and the next morning exemptee went to regain his meds and on inspection found some missing. His meds were weighed before the police confiscated them and taped shut. When he retrieved them the next morning they were indeed short grams. Not RIGHT!

they already do ... in Ontario, it is called a R.I.D.E. programme but everyone has road blocks and random intrusions under the guise of stopping drunk drivers.

My wife just told me a story of a guy at her work who was "busted" in Hamilton ... the cop took 2.5 ounces of weed and "let him go" ... I think the authorities should be the first to be drug screened ... fucking hypocrites.

Alison, I do so agree, and what this boils down to is police harassment of legal exemptees, which is uncalled for.

Never in the 10 years of Hempfest that I can recall, and someone correct me if I am in error, has there been even one time where the police were called for. Hempfest is a peace-loving gathering of like minded folk.

Why don't the fuzz go catch all the drunks at Wassaga Beach or at any of the other weekend or summer party spots.

Booze=trouble, and we all know it.
Cannabis=peace, and never any problems.

The only minor problems at Hempfest, which are always dealt with internally in a mature non-confrontational manner, have been when those that choose to consume alcohol get a little roudy.

they already do ... in Ontario, it is called a R.I.D.E. programme but everyone has road blocks and random intrusions under the guise of stopping drunk drivers.

The R.I.D.E,programme which is Canada wide, has a new tool also. They have all the standard tests for sobriety and if they suspect someone there is no need of a sample or the suspects urine, they have a buccal swab that detects cannabis, opiates, and something else I cannot recall. I had the opportunity to try one and they WORK!!

So the moral of the story is if you are driving don't consume anything that could impair you judgement , this includes most medications also.

If you were to get in an accident and found to be under the influence, your insurance can be voided and you would be responsible for the damages to both vehicles.

Don't chance it, drive safely!
