Opium farmers 'detain' policemen, journos
Farmers in Bhagwanpur Paterwa VDC of Bara district held a police team deployed from the district headquarter to destroy opium fields in the village including accompanying journalists against their will for almost six hours Wednesday afternoon, media reports say.
The opium farmers deflated the tires of police vehicles in which the police team had arrived and also confiscated the cameras of journalists Upendra Thakur of Kantipur TV and Bhaiyaram Sah of Avenues TV.
The farmers prevented the police team from destroying the poppy field accusing them of taking a huge sum as bribe during plantation.
An Armed Police Force squad later rescued the captivated cops and journalists, the report said.
However, Chief District Officer of Bara, Kailashnath Kharel has denied the report.
Local authorities in Terai district of Bara and Rautahat began destroying the illegal opium farms in remote villages of the district from last week onwards.
Reports say over 100 hectares of land in remote villages of the two districts have been used for the narcotics production without the knowledge of local authorities.
However, villagers accuse the local administration of being complicit with the opium farmers and share the profit from the sales of the narcotics.
