it depend on what basis DGB. there is a very interesting law and order episode were they deal with and issue like that. a gun manufacuter that knowingly made weapons that were easy to illegally modify to make signficantly more deadly yet they chose to turn a blind eye and ignore it because they got better sales with the easy to modify gun. making a good gun itself is not in and of itself a crime, nor does it mean this gun will get used against people.

The problem isn't the MLAT itself. It's perfectly reasonable for nations to work together to deal with criminals who hide behind borders, say for example a gang leader who controls members on both sides of the border, or maybe in several countries. Ditto dealing with terrorist leaders such as Bin Laden.

However, the US DEA has opted to interpret MLAT as meaning that they can arbitrarily force US laws on other nations, and that doesn't fly. Every country has hundreds, possibly even thousands of old laws that are no longer enforced, but still on the books. Take the old laws in certain states and provinces that required someone to walk well ahead of a car with a warning flag or lantern so that horses wouldn't be surprised and spooked by the oncoming car -- they're still on the books. Or areas that make it illegal for an unmarried man and woman to share a hotel room.

In Canada, any laws that were in place against the sale of cannabis seeds have not been enforced for well over a decade.

The charges of money laundering are equally ludicrous, and even the DEA has admitted they don't have enough evidence to prove money laundering has taken place.

A man has been arrested because some knob in the DEA "knows" there must be evidence somewhere if only they dig hard enough, not because he's a criminal under Canadian law. A man is being threatened with extradition because of a nation whose government cannot fathom that it doesn't rule the world. A man had his business shut down because he has the audacity to be an obnoxious arsehole who speaks his mind, and puts his money where his mouth is.

Yes, our Canadian government signed up to MLAT. But look at what any nation that doesn't sign up is threatened with: economic embargoes, duties applied to their exports to the US, etc. But I doubt our government officials ever expected that US authorities actually believe their BS linking cannabis use with terrorism, nor do I think they ever expected the US would try to force the prosecution of laws that we're trying to change or remove from our books entirely.
