I was having a discussion with someone about GM food,as it seems to/could have some negative effects. The question I have is: are femalized cannabis seeds geneticly modified?By going with what I know of GM plants/seeds they are not but I not quite sure about it.If anyone knows or has some info I'm missingcould you please help.Peace

Hi Richi420, :)

no mate, they are not technically a GM product as they've had no artificial gene modification/insertion.

To make femmed beans all you need is a chemical which changes the hormonal balance of the plant and silver salts like Silver Thiosulphate do this.Something to do with the interference of Ethylene pathways within the plant which causes it to produce male flowers which are then used to pollinate clones identical to the one reversed.

This produces all female beans usually but if not grown perfectly, meaning with minimal stress they do tend to hermie.

I'll be producing some beans this way in my current grow diary and will be pollinating some selected Cheese clones as part of a breeding project.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks mate, thats what I thought but the other one I was talking to said that that tech. now they are classified as GMas they wont naturally fem themselves and since we do it,it makes it a GM. I just thought maybe I missed something or something changed. I have made many fem'ed seed before and didnt think it was GMing them. Thanks for the help mate.Peace

you can find it here. page 23

the article leaves you with questions and concerns. it has been controversial.

WHat article? Frankenbeanstein article? It is interesting, links alot of people together...I have heard lots of talk already. some people say joe pietri is just looking for attention while others like me are just in awe and don't know where to look for answers. he is throwing alot of people out in the open, but it comes down to what do you want to believe? I have no clue, and will hold my thoughts, other than it's crazy.

I liked the Dr Frankenbeanstein article. It really made me think about the canna business scene in a different way.
The big companies - Greenhouse is one of the worst at the moment in my opinion, just pump out stacks and stacks of average varieties that are all the same and expect people to pay ridiculous prices for them. The kids all think that the big canna business guys are really cool, because they smoke lots and have magazines and pretty pictures.
The fact is that it is just pretty picture, marketing.
The feminized seeds are just more of the same - the one fix solution to your canna dreams - just like 50 different types of nutrients you don't need, and overpriced everything from the hydro shop.
IMHO good seeds come from good diverse lines. No, feminized plants won't turn into the Blob and go on a rampage, but they will change the face of cannabis, and change what you'll have in your medical garden for years to come.

If we want to protect the 'backyard' nature of cannabis, then don't buy feminized seeds - don't buy into canna business.

This is off topic abit but I would have to agree with you on that. I understand that cannabis seed companies are just like any company as they're in it to make money. However I do think they take advantage on the fact that cannabis is illegal so they can get away with charging obscene amounts of money.I would have to say that I agree with you on greenhouse seeds too,I never liked the fact that he charged so much money for sub-par strains. I have come to really dis-like greenhouse seeds since I seen him say that he wants cannabis to stay illegal so he can make more money,he knows the harms with prohibition and he doesnt care, just cares about money. Personally I dont think cannabis seeds should cost more then $20 for a pack of ten or so.At $20 a pack you still can make a desent profit. If regular seed companies can do it I dont see why cannabis seeds should be any differant. They are just taking advantage of an unjust, racist, harmful law and taking advantage of people, mostly the sick who can barley afford to pay their rent and food. But that seems to be the way the worlds going, caring more about the money then the people.Peace
