View Full Version : Fan Speed Control - Which One to Use?

Hi ,
I'm buying a 340 cfm 6" CanFan, but I only want to use it with a 1000 watt HPS, so I have to slow it down.
Can anyone tell me how Fan Speed Controllers work, and which is the best type to run with a centrifugal fan.
I got an over specced fan so I can add another 1000 watts later, and because I think it will be very quite when slowed down to 1/3 speed. Also I am going to put one of the 6" OdorSoks on the end, installed properly they are pretty good.
I am a cheapskate, so I want to buy from a hardware or electrical store at the absolute minimum price.
Thanks!

Most I've seen use a dimmer switch. The round one button type, press in for on/off and dial up or down. Unsure of the price but prolly 10 bux or less.
I'm going to buy an elicent speed control, can't remember if it's 15 or 25 bux, let you know in a couple of days when i buy it.

Yeah... you can use a conventional single speed and wire a position swith like hashimoto said (grab one at what used to be radio shack... a good hardware store will have all you need too) You wanna be careful though, the cheaper the fan the more likely its static speed is detrimental, which is to say that when you adjust the speed of the fan the bearings, axle, basically any moving part is not meant to undergo those forces. It will likely reduce the longevity of your fan to play with those settings but you may have luck! It's unfortunate that engineering has gotten so efficient that everything right down to materials and construction are specific to that fans speed. I suppose in honesty however, you won't have a problem as I have seen it done successfully. It's just the engineer in me speaking.

Get yourself a good fan controller it's not something you want to skimp on. I have burned out 3 cheap ones now, and things could have been really bad had I not noticed it when I did.

I just got the Active air unit for $29.99, I am a cheapskate too, but some things you have to put into perspective and spend a lil more on the right part for the job. So far I love it, I love the control of it and that it is made for newer fans which can be used at reduced speed for higher efficiency.

Thanks Diskrete,
I know there are two types and I reckon I got the good one.
I'm not too cheap for $30 bucks, I can probably swing it...
Hope to meet you at the expo!
Cheers,

Sure it's found on the hydrofarm site, here's a link http://www.hydrofarm.com/pb_detail.php?itemid=8589
I am also going to be looking into temp/co2 controllers pretty soon...The sentinel unit looks really sturdy and full of options.

"I am a cheapskate, so I want to buy from a hardware or electrical store at the absolute minimum price".
everthink about other means. Fans
ceiling fans. reliable, go on sale,
youve got to be mechanicly inclined but ill bet you it would work great
dismantling the motor and putting your own fan blade and housing.
i see just mantinance and cleaning for yrs.
slowing a motor down,
i do believe it creates more heat!
bad deal for a few reasons

We have private forums for each state now, you don't have to speak to the oregon people if you don't want to. they have an established network of people helping out often, when they speak about how it works...it makes sense and sounds kind of wacky. But, the oregon program clinton has helped to setup is attainable in any state. the place to meet people is there, it's what you make of it. Promote it to other patients, the more the merrier. if nothing else you have support of the people you can talk to, and just like here the cheering on you receive when you grow! it's always cool to have a lil extra encouragement. The concept of Stone soup has changed over there. that concept is still kind of alive but now it's cannabis compassion, showing compassion for others and being able to speak freely amongst registered patients in your state. aswell as converse with those out of state patients who you can network with or just share knowledge. I guess what it comes down to is it's a place alot like here, this is international and we have people everywhere! the same love I get here I get over there, here I can enjoy the company of thousands of people with the same intrest over there it's alot less people but the quality of the community is about the same. I wish I was in your state to help you out, I really do, I have said that before. Perhaps on a visit...once life can get itself together!

Yes sir! I know how that cycle seems to nevere end, We are pregnant with another. Truck still needs about $3500 to finish it, no money, and my timer decided to play some games on me...I just have no idea how long the timer was messing with me. I had it set on 12/12 and one of the pins jumped out of place so I have no idea what happened or when, I just know the lights were on when they were supposed to be, I hope It didnt mess with anything.
