RCMP already busy in 2010
Sergeant Tim Korman presented the January 2010 RCMP report to council at their regular meeting on February 22. He said the detachment has been busy so far this year, and that is especially noticeable with regards to the number of prisoners being held: already 50 more than last year this time.
He said in response to complaints of people causing nuisance problems in downtown Meadow Lake, the detachment will be increasing its foot patrols in the area during the daytime hours.
Council was interested in discussing the RCMP's Annual Performance Plan (APP). Sgt. Korman said he has to get together with each of the communities the detachment polices and find out what they feel the priorities are for policing.
"Last year the community of Meadow Lake's priorities were violence, assaults, drugs and substance abuse, and traffic," he explained, citing mischief complaints as one to keep an eye on.
Each councillor then gave their opinions on whether the priorities had changed or not. Most councillors agreed that the list was still accurate, but there were some other points brought up, including gang activity, which Sgt. Korman said has its roots in Edmonton. Currently there are seven young people in custody, and there are more arriving in the area all the time.
Councillors were also happy to hear that the RCMP is working hard to provide more education to students on various issues such as drugs and crime, including a Student Crime Stoppers program and future training for the D.A.R.E. program.
