Men in court accused of running rural Sask. marijuana grow op

REGINA — A trial is underway for three men who were charged in an alleged marijuana growing operation in rural Saskatchewan three years ago.

Nam Dinh Hoang, Quang Trong Tiet and Van Dinh Hoang were arrested and charged in August 2007, after an RCMP investigation led to searches at homes in Raymore, Cupar, and Regina.

Nam Dinh Hoang and Tiet were both residents of the province at the time, while Hoang was a resident of Surrey.

The three men are facing seven charges each, including production of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, theft of utilities, and conspiracy to produce marijuana.

The three accused began their trial at Regina Court of Queen's Bench on Monday by pleading not guilty to all of the charges.

The trial is slated to last two weeks, and is being conducted with the use of Vietnamese translators.

The proceedings began Monday with a voir dire — or a trial within a trial — to determine whether certain evidence is admissible.
