AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been convicted of cannabis possession in a New Zealand court, The New Zealand Herald reported.
The 56-year-old Australian rock star pleaded guilty yesterday at the North Island's Tauranga District Court after he was caught with 25 grams of cannabis on his boat, named Barchetta, at Tauranga Bridge Marina on October 7.
Rudd appeared in court under his birth name Phillip Hugh Witchke and was fined NZ$250 plus $132.89 court costs.
His lawyer Craig Tuck sought a discharge without conviction arguing that any drug conviction could impact his client's ability to enter some countries.
Tuck said Witschke had traveled to more than 20 countries in the past nine months as a "drummer in one of the biggest rock bands in the world."
The prosecution argued a conviction would not necessarily bar entry to any country.
Community Magistrate Robyn Paterson refused the request for discharge without conviction, and said that the drummer had played "Russian roulette" by being in possession of cannabis.
"It was not just an accident," she said. "You were blindly ignoring the law. You have been playing Russian roulette."
Rudd was a member of AC/DC from 1975 until 1983, and again from 1994 to the present.
