View Full Version : How strong should I mix my solution?

All nutrients bottles come with how much per gallon strength to use at various stages of growth. You can follow these directions as long as you don't over do it with a bunch of additives.
For seedlings: 400-700
1st week of veg 800-1200
Veg and early flower 1200-1500
5th to 6th week of flower 1800, then back too 1500, then 1200, then flush.
ON another note: I have been growing in hydro with Dutch Master Advance A + B, Silica, Zone, and Max "Flower" Best results ever. I run the entire grow at 1200- 1500 ppm until 3 weeks from harvest when I jack it up to 1800. After that I drop ppm to 1200 and then flush. I got a kola that was wet @5.4oz last time, and dried @ 1.2 oz This grow was in a bubbler, and yielded over a lb.
Good Luck

In my albeit limited experience, if you are using super chelated nutes, such as AN Connoisseur, during flower, the solution strengths you recommend will burn the plants, due to the increased availability of the nutes. The initial EC or PPM of the water used will also affect how strong you can mix your solution; and, hard well water often requires specially formulated nutes. Some strains tolerate stronger solution strengths and seed companies rarely include comments on whether or not a given strain is a heavy feeder.

Actually; chelated nutrients are generally Micro Nutrients. A plant only uptakes what it needs. chelated nutrients should not burn your plant.
If you use a nutrient that burns your plants; Stop using it!

That's overly simplistic; any commercial nutrient recipe, given in excess, will burn a plant. By your logic, anyone who mixes a recipe too strong and burns a plant, should stop using their nutes. Can you point to a commercial formulation that openly states on the company's website that it is impossible to burn a plant with their formulation?

I agree with airedog if conditions are perfect your plant will uptake too much and burn itself up. We have all experienced this nute burn can happen with any nutrient if given in excess. This is why most nutrient companies have "recomended" and even "aggressive" feeding schedules. In most cases less is more it does not take too long to figure out if your plants are lovin life and why put more in if the logic is they won't use what they don't need, why pour your money down the drain?

Gotta agree with airdog and GIP, too much is too much. Heck it'll even happen in organics, which i learned first hand last year

 some will take full strengh as directed then the next crop burns at i half recomended ppms and so on ,:) oj

Using it as a guide could be bad but I love this info as a template, how fast to rise nutes and what weeks and so on, its nice to have something to use to at least get started in the planning stage. True though about burning, lol my chocolope burns no matter what I give her it seems but shes still kickin, hope to cut a clone and flower one day still. Also I think it depends which PPM scale you use cause the european ones are higher numbers.

Advanced Nutrients and House & Garden both have online calculators.
AN:
http://www.advancednutrients.com/hydroponics/calc/
H & G:
http://www.house-garden.us/nutrient-calculator/ (http://www.house-garden.ca/feed-charts/mix-rates/)
As oddjobs and Dr. Dave noted, strength varies grow to grow and the amounts given are guidelines. Personally, I've found that they usually mix hot and it's best to start out at 1/2 strength and go from there.

Well as a commercial grower. One who designed and mix his own nutrient solutions, can tell you that I think I know a bit more of what I am talking about, than folks who have to google the info. I agree some plants like a stronger nutrient solution than others, but Micro nutrients "chelated" although available to plant through entire ph range, and it is commonly known among hydro agriculture producers is that "plants only uptake the amount of micro nutrients that they need; Period.
Plants get burnt by excesses of nitrogen, and other salts that are too strong. Not chelated Micro nutrients.
FYI Commercial growers use EC as high a 3. or a ppm rating of 2300 ppm. (Crop-King teachings). However. I favor a lower ppm range personally.
Learn from me or argue with me. I grow approx. 750 plants per year + med plants. I never burn my plants. Ever. Why? Because, I know what I am doing
Micro nutrients and additives do not burn plants. Nitrogen salts do. This is why you add "additives to reservoir 1st, and gauge the amount of part A & B using your ppm range. If you know what you are doing.
One final note. I made this a s template so to speak. I also have found that MMJ plants respond really well to 1200 ppm, consistently through entire grow.

Are your numbers for the DNF based formula in your first post; your own blend of nutrients, mentioned in your last post; or, as a guide for any nutrient formula?
It's not that I want to argue, just that I find it really hard accepting there is only ONE TRUE method. Your FAQ series almost seems based on this premise, and it just does not make sense. Everyone will find a method that works for them and trying to pound all peglike objects into round holes will only prolong the search.
One thing is sure, making people feel that they are wrong to voice a different opinion, or worse, feel they need to apologise for doing so, sows discord and promotes ignorance. Why do you feel so threatened by differing points of view?

OK. All I posted is fact. It might be others opinion that I am wrong, but I posted fact.
Now. You asked 2 question's and lectured me about how I should act or post, respond...Whatever.
My response is learn! I did not come here to kiss butt.
2ndly,
All agricultural grows are based on simple concepts. One has to wonder why so many people spew out different concepts, but never really provide any insight.
If you are attempting to grow a ton of food ( I do it). You want a simple, proven, consistent plan. I have that plan. The information passes on to MMJ, and surpasses many ideas about how to grow our favorite plant. Many will have you believe that there are better ways to grow a Tomato, but, pot is like a tomato. If you can grow a tomato you can grow pot. Simple as that. After 3-4 times; You realize that some ways are better than others. You have to learn that for yourself.
So; You ask for confirmation, but challenge the concept.
Well; My concept is sound and passed on to me from a South African Grower; Also; Crop King Educational bible (Commercial; hydroponics greenhouse corporation)
Here it is; My guideline will help any grower. You might be able to yield better with a stronger mix, and you might yield better with a weaker solution. In the commercial hydro community...People tend to allow up to a 25% difference in a mix solution without any harm to plants, or yield. if you really know; Then you know that a plant will feed itself for a time, just as when we flush a plant, at finish. The flush allows for stored nutrients in the plant to be used up; allowing for the sugars to convert and make the herb tasty..
This formula guideline is perfect with GH or AN 3-part, Dutch Master Advanced , and especially DM Gold. Blue Moon Nutrients, And I bet I could grow a tree with any commercial nutrient line.
Point is. You never want to over fert.
Commercial mixes are pushed to 3.0 Ec or approx. 2300 ppm. You can grow pot that way, but, one thing for sure. The stronger mix you use...the harder to get good taste.
I grew a plant yielding a lb. easy, using this method. I am not here to lie, and I have credentials. Believe what you want!
You want to be a better grower. Follw me.
lw
This formula works.
