R. Scott Weddle's May 10 letter said the Herald-Leader was liberal, because it didn't credit George W. Bush for being a states' rights advocate on the issue of allowing oil companies to drill for oil in a federal wildlife preserve. He must have forgotten that the Bush administration is currently arguing against states rights before the Supreme Court.

In the case before the court, Valerie Corral, a cancer patient, was arrested by the Bush administration for daring to possess and grow medical marijuana with a doctor's prescription in a state that long ago voted to legalize medical marijuana.

Bush has opposed states rights in the 10 states that have voted to legalize medical marijuana by voter ballot initiative. Another example of Republican disregard for the will of the voters is the case of the Washington D.C, medical marijuana ballot initiative. When medical marijuana received 85 percent of the vote, congressional Republicans simply tossed out the election results and declared that states don't have the right to make their own laws.

So, thank you Herald-Leader for being right about the issue of Bush and states rights. Don't be influenced by Republican crocodile tears. Bush is a flip-flopper on this issue. He is only for states rights when the states want to ban gay marriage or enact right-wing legislation.
