SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The Crown and the defence presented arguments Tuesday at a sentencing hearing for the former owner of The Cannabis Café in Saint John.
Lynn Wood was found guilty of trafficking in marijuana, in spite of her claim that she was running a "compassion club" for people who only used the drug for medical reasons.
FROM FEB. 21, 2005: Guilty verdict for Cannabis Café
Her lawyer, Richard Northrup, said she wasn't a typical drug dealer and asked the judge to consider a conditional sentence.
Northrup said she only sold from the store and that all her customers had to swear an affidavit that the marijuana was for medicinal purposes.
But Crown prosecutor Nicole Poirier recommended a jail term.
She said Wood's store was close to a high school and that she sold to at least one person under the age of 18.
Poirier also said the woman continued to sell marijuana, even though she was under a court order to stop.
The judge will hand down a sentence on June 1.
The Cannabis Café has been closed.
