Belong To Any Yahoo! Groups? Be Aware Of Web Beacons

Victoria from the osxtiger Yahoo! Group writes:

If you belong to ANY Yahoo! Groups - be aware that Yahoo! is now using “Web Beacons” to track every Yahoo! Group user. They’re similar to cookies, but allow Yahoo! to record every Web site and every group you visit, even when you’re not connected to Yahoo!.

Look at its updated privacy statement here.

About halfway down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see a link that says WEB BEACONS.

Web beacon Yahoo group cookies privacy Big Brother tracking

Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, find a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo! Network."

In that section find a little "Click Here to Opt Out" link that will let you "opt-out" of its snooping. Be careful NOT to click on the next button shown. It is an "Opt Back In" button that, if clicked, will UNDO the opt-out.

Note that Yahoo!'s invasion of your privacy - and your ability to opt-out of it - is not user-specific. It is MACHINE specific. That means you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use.

Please forward this to your other groups. You might complain, too, but I'm not sure if anyone is listening.

Please read this page as well..

There is ONE more to opt-out of! (1/2 way down the page)

You can also tell your browser to reject tracking and 3rd party cookies from a site or domain..

big brother at work here. gov't said they would make internet companies cough up info on certain clients and this provides a way to do that. the days of free speech and activity are fast coming to a close with the net.

It has to do with MONEY, not spying by governments.

The info does not ID who you are....just where "some user" visits after looking at page "X". This info does nothing for governments. BUT it's a GOLDMINE for marketing companies. It's used to find out what advertising motivates you to "click" on an ad. It's aggregate info....

The problem is no one asked you if they could use your "intellectual property".

I had my brain chip installed last week. one ear is Ethernet, the other is USB.
And of course my hair is Wi-Fi and my tooth is blue.........coming soon?

It is, however, a very severe first step in that direction. It may not be that way now, but that has no bearing on what allowing such things will create in the future. as its going now, i see a military state in the future (at least for the US), however i have never found anyone who agrees with that...

i do agree its useful for marketing, however!, why is the government requesting search engines to release info (not sure if these web beacons are included in that)? very peculiar, and scary, indeed...
