Thumbs up A New Lighting Option

Something that I've been using and their: GREAT !
    The new Compact Fluorescent
The Compact Fluorescent has a built-in ballast, uses little energy, and provides the full spectrum that plants require. New technological electronic ballasts provide for instant, flicker-free illumination compared to early designed magnetic ballasts. Compact Fluorescents last much longer than regular fluorescent tubes (most fluorescent grow tubes on the market begin to diminish after only a couple of months!). The heat generated is far less than any H.P.S. or M.H. light source - bulbs can be placed within inches of tender seedlings for maximum usable light without burning plants. Many growers who are growing medium to tall plants will hang these lights from the ceiling and position them within the plant canopy for intense supplemental side lighting to increase production. Compact Fluorescents can be used "as is" with a socket assembly and cord (sold separately) plugged directly into the wall, or they may be installed in most of the reflectors in our catalog. Think about the cost savings on the ballast alone, not to mention the electricity . . .

For an inexpensive reflector for your Compact Fluorescent, check out the Econo Wing by Sunlight Supply. Be sure to purchase a Sunlight Supply Socket Assembly and an 8' Grounded Power Cord to complete the system. http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/items.asp...tus=0&Tp=&B c=

The lights in the link are high wattage cfl's and are purported to be very good for growing. I can guarantee you all Walmart doesn't sell 105 watt cfls.

    Hi Ken,
    Thanks for the info.
There are a lot of folks here who use the CF bulbs with great success.
Folks are correct, the prices at that site are really high and it's hard to tell if they're even a good brand name bulb. From the small pix on the site, they appear to be bulbs out of Turkey, though I could be wrong, and such bulbs should be cheaper then a brand name, not more expensive.
Though no fault of yours, it appears that the sellers jacked up the prices of the bulbs just because they're being offered on a hydroponic supply site going for what appears to be a three to five hundred percent profit and while they'll probably make some sales, it most likely won't be from anyone here. We know better and most could not afford to pay for such a markup. If the seller lowered the price to within reason, they'd probably see more profit in making a lot of sales, then waiting around for the uninformed to buy a few bulbs at a high price.
    Just my six sense,

You'd be surprised. Even in my backwards country, I can buy hi-Watt CF's in my crappy little home center. They're being marketed to replace a lot of types of outdoor home lighting, which draw way more current then the HiWatt CF's.
So while Wally World might not have them, I'd check out Home Depot or a lighting supply website.

    Question

I'm a 100% disabled Vet and get ssd so money wise I'm in the same place you are very very little extra. That part of the reason I went with them. Have you priced a MH or HPS
I can buy 3 cf with hoods etc. for the same price as a 250 watt HID.
Second they run very cool I can touch them without burning myself but the biggest thing about them is the Cops can't find them.
In my area they fly over using infered to find grows.
The HID lights put out lots of heat that's how they find them.
Now your local Cop Shop may not have IR gear but your State Boys do.
Dea has been suppling them to all 50 states.

But if money is all you want to talk about here's one more.
When I was buying bags I sat down cleaned a quater and 25% of that weight was waste seeds etc.
Also if your spine gives you all the fun that mine does, I've found that just triing to keep up with the pain I could easly spead $600+
So dollars and cent wise growing is much better then bag by bag. I got my lights and everything a bit at a time and worked my way up.

but wallyworld has them at a fraction of the cost...dollar fer dollar you are best to shop around IMO. and you can buy many more and really beef up your lum's. and have a little extra left over for sunglasses

I hope you don't think anyone was jumping on you kenbev, I agree with you, growing your own is the way to go by far. By any methods or lights it's the way to go. Bush said buying dope supports terrorism, let help him and grow our own.

    Kev,
CF's are the way to go, especially on a budget.
That's the way I'm going, if I ever get my Cabinet built.
I have about 300 Watts of CF's just waiting for something to do.
Like I said, a lot of folks here use CF's. I had a MH, but I can't afford to run it and then run lights for clone and veg. Now I can do all and still save one hundred watts.
Here bag weed is about one hundred USD a kilo, but it's far from med quality and med quality is is about seven USD a gram, but I have to travel 3 hours each way to get it.

I have an outdoor grow going on someplace else.
I know about cops, I have two living right next door to me!

    Be Well,
    Buddy

Some cfl's use a standard size socket some use larger socket called a MOGUL socket. Also, make sure when you buy CFL's that you are looking at the ACTUAL wattage and not the "COMPARES TO A ..." wattage. Lots of cfl bulbs have the actual wattage printed in small type and the comparable wattage in LARGE type.

I'm not sure about this but aren't there high intensity cfl's? I've use a Flourex light from Home Depot before and had good results. My flourex used 65 watts and put out 10,000 lumens. Great for cloning and veg.

And a side note. Some people were really shitty to this guy if you re-read the first page. Let's all just cool out, eh.

The CFL's I've bought from WM and HD were 42-45watts bulbs the are rated as equivalent to 150 and 200watts of incandescent light.

Originally I had eight of these CFL's running. My CFL's were put to rest when I bought a 150w HPS. Originally I had four CFL's running along with the 150, but the four CFL's put out as much or more heat than the 150. That may be due partly to the safety glass on the 150. The 150 has a self contained ballast. It's actually an HPS flood light. I've drilled holes in the metal case for ventilation. I also have two 400w HPS's that I've done the same modifications on. The 400's also needed holes drilled in the four corners to hang with S hooks and chain

The 150w was $49 w/tax and shipping. The 400w HPS's were $113 each w/tax and shipping. The 400's also have a self contained ballast. With holes drilled for ventilation and a cooling fan on the light, I can place my hand flat on the case for 5-6 seconds before it becomes uncomfortable. Because they also have a safety glass, my plants can grow to within 3-4 inches of the 400's.

    The lights came from e-conolight.com

Wow That's cheap every were I had looked they were much more expenive. Some where around $300 for everything.
    Do you have heat problems?
The Cops fly over with Heat Scanner (IR) looking for growers around here which was my the main reason that and power usage. CF'S are much kinder on your ele bill. I watched a show on TLC or Hist channel but the show talked about how they were caughting grower. I was amazed at the money they were spending but the big thing for me was that they were telling us about it.
So I looked it up on the net it was true the DEA spent vast amounts of money to equip all the states with IR gear for their "state boys" helo or light plane to find the portable suns or the HID lamps.
I got my Cf's from here

Folks weren't 'Real shitty', just cautious. Remember that we've had a fair number of people, register and in their first few posts, direct us to a website site selling things.

I'm not saying that this thread is spam, but in the very beginning, it sure looked like it.

    Cool

I echo the part about price. Way too expensive. Not that you are the first. Everybody that has an invention to sell charges too much in the cannabis world. $400 or $500 for a vaporizer is terrible. $300 or more for cloth bags to make hash is way too much.

Dont get me started on pot prices. I liked the four finger lids for $20 in the early 1970's or $30.00 for an oz of killer columbian gold. Maybe someday when we get this thing legal we can bring the prices way down too.
