    Talking I need advice on buying a Wireless Router

    My desktop computer got hit by lightning and got the motherboard, 20 LCD monitor and modem. Now I have a laptop and I want to protect it from lightning with a wireless router. I am asking what routers TY members think are the best name brands. thanks Cadillac...

    I think you should be looking for a GOOD surge protector... not a router... correct me if I'm wrong...

    well, i just re-read your post... I guess I can look at it this way...

    You want a wireless router so you do not need to hook directly to your laptop... I suggest the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model WRT54G

    Cadi;
    lriv is right. Spend some money on a professional level power conditioner (Oneac, PowerVar to name a few), and the computer itself becomes a disposable commodity after a few years of use. Your computer got fried because it was plugged into your homes electrical system. Everything in your house got hit, your computer is the most electrically sensitive and crapped out. If you get hit by lightning again and your laptop is plugged in for a battery charge, you're going to lose that too. Just some idle thoughts. . .

    I'd been using a D-Link router for quite some time, but it's an outdated model so I don't think you should count on that for comparisons with newer hardware.

    I'd invest in a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), but I'm not sure you can run the phone line for DSL through one. I know you can run a modem line, but that's a different animal.

    linksys is owned by Cisco and you can't beat Cisco. a good UPS like APC or one of the others is a must have. here are some from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...on=APC&x=0&y=0

    i would personally go for something like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16842101138

    first u need to buy yourself a "UPS" device and run your whole system through that with the proper software on your computer incase of voltage spikes.
    If you can afford it---get a Gigabit Router w/ a 100 Mbps WIFI I had many frustrations with data transfer between computer to computer(networking) until i got a gigabit router with some cat 6e cable to go with it.

    There's some good advice in this thread but I'll put in my 2 cents.

    As far as what the best is for the common consumer? D-Link and Linksys. (I prefer D-Link)

    If you are looking for affordable, go to Best Buy and buy a cheapie. I've set up plenty of wireless networks with the cheapest wireless routers and they work pretty much as well as the others, but the security isn't as strong. Buy a cheap router and get a decent firewall.

    Peace,

    thanks Iriv, I do need a better surge protector. I have been using a 15 amp Newpoint brand surge protector that did not work. I will look at that router on ebay. thanks Cadillac...
