The rep system is basically a peer review tool on this forum. It is used to indicate that you either agree or disagree, enjoy or not enjoy, a fellow member's post.
To give a rep, be it a positive rep or a negative rep, click on the icon of the scales under a fellow member's avatar. A box will open that asks whether you approve/disapprove of the post. There is also room to make a comment about why you have given the rep.
Once you have clicked "ok" after selecting approve/disapprove, the member you have repped will either have an increment added to their rep total if the rep given was positive OR deducted from their rep total if the rep given is negative.
Depending on your own rep total, which you have accumulated for your own posts, a rep amount will be then added/subtracted to the member to whom you have given the rep.
Positive reps show up as green if your own rep total is greater than 50 reps, or grey if your own rep total is less than 50. If a neg rep is given, it will show up on the members User CP as grey.
The more reps you have, the more reps you can allocate/deduct when repping a post.
As I said, this is a peer review tool. It is simply a tool to show your appreciation/displeasure in another member's posting. I use reps often as I find it a good way to give encouragement or guidance to a member.
To check if you have any reps that have been given to you, simply click on User CP and voila, there is your reputation level on this forum.
I hope that explains it for you.
North, if you now go to your User CP, you will see that I have just given you a positive rep!

I hope it catches on here. I pushed it at my former site and it worked extremely well. In my opinion, peer review is good in a forum.

I kind of agree with that, until it becomes an obsession

Then you will get negative rep wars and whining

I believe we are both members at this other place you speak of

I never look at my rep or give very little on this site. I find that anyone agreeing or disagreeing with you will do so in the post without hesitation. That is what I like about this place. Your rep is earned by the posts made on this forum. I remember a name, not a rep stat.

I have used it more on other sites though and as Dr Dog says it can become an obsession and gather clutter. But it can be used responsibly though. It all depends on the member base.

This is just my opinion though.

I'm not sure what you mean. Can you not see reps in your User CP. Check again as I have already given you a rep. I can see the scale icon under your avatar.

    Smookin Moose,

    Thanks for the expalaination.

the grey symbol is what I was wondering about. I happened to notice I got a grey bar, with no expalination of what it was or what the giver was repping Me for.
i have several greens,17 points total, and the one grey, that seems to be nuetral?

Just for the record folks, I dont use the rep system, i'll let my approval or disapproval be know on threads, seems more honest to me I guess. nothing personal.

The grey symbol comes when you get a positive rep from a member who does not yet have any rep power themselves. The rep is still given but there is no plus increment to your own rep total.
I take your point about repping, but I can tell you that it can be inspiring for younger members when they get reps for a good post from senior members and mods.
Re rep wars and problems with whining, that is clearly a matter for mods to deal with. In my opinion that is unlikely to occur here as most, if not all, members are mature folks.
I hope that helps explain things for you.

Mate, it seems the same as the others to me. I can see your on-line icon, the scale icon, and the alert post icon. What are you seeing? You may not be able to see the alert post icon on your own posts ok. Can you take a screen grab and show me.

Max, there IS a lot of love here. Only yesterday I was saying to Marco how much the sense of happiness is pervading the forum. It has been a goal of mine to try and achieve a sense of harmony here. I love it! When we re sick, it is laughter and happiness that helps us heal, or look beyond our pain and suffering. I believe laughter is the best healer, next to cannabis of course lol.

I have had a few queries on this lately so am posting this again. Reps are a valuable tool if used wisely, specially as an encouragement of younger, newer members.
