Default Feedback on TY's New Style

As the title states I am looking for some feedback on changes so far here at TY to the forum templates. Marco had asked me at one point to bring the forum appearance inline with the front page and just want to see how everyone is liking the new look!

    Thanks

I have darkened the green, please let me know if it is still hard to read... Colors give me a real hard time to distinguish on my main monitor (old Toshiba 42" LCD).

TY looks much nicer now lightly_toasted - THANKS!

With a wrapped code around a YouTube URL, we can now post YouTube (only) embedded videos, so that's a good start.

But as with previous vBulletin board versions TY used, the number of guests is still abnormally too high at all times.

With this new vBulletin board version you installed, it seems that both real human and automated guests are all called guests now.

Any automated spider bot engines on this board represents a serious security issue for TY's members, and if you cannot ban them with this board version, then perhaps you could install a ban script on TY's server that would recognize anything automated and ban them from accessing this board.

As mostly everyone knows by now, I also operate a board since almost 9 years, and security is so tight that everything automated is blocked..and since quite some time now, spammers can't register either.

Keep on the great work lightly_toasted!

P.S...this post is not a complaint - just good advice to make TY a safer place to be..much safer.

If I can do it, then perhaps you can.

If you can't do it, then switch TY board's version for an IPS (Invision Power Services) board version!

The license is cheap, and the service is EXCELLENT!

Things are still a work in progress! I am currently rebuilding TY's database since it was upgraded from a 3.x version to 3.8.4 before I was made admin. While the upgrade worked, the database needs to be rebuilt into a 3.8.x database. Right now I am limited to what mods can be installed and also making certian other changes. Basically the database is locked to adding new columns and info for this version of VBulletin. Had a proper backup been performed before the upgrade past 3.5.5 and a new database created, this issue could of been avoided entirely. Now I must manually rebuild the db so that information is not lost.

I will be installing a spam filter that is geared to preventing spammers at signup by checking their ip, email, and username against a database of known spammers. Also I will be adding a robots.txt that will limit the activity of spiders, etc.

All in due time, we will get TY back on track very soon. I am doing this in my freetime so somethings may take awhile, but I will get it right! Also this is a donation of my time, so it is hard to prioritize it over other projects that pay me, lol.

I will be starting a thread very soon to list improvements, etc so everyone will be aware of new features such as the youtube link.

Well I am basically going off the direction from when me and Marco had disscussed improvements to TY many months ago.

So far the most daunting task is rebuilding the database. That is manually comparing and copying db tables and info to a fresh untouched db while taking care not to include old db entries that are causing db errors.

    Smile looks great Lightly Toasted.......

seems you have your work cut out for you and the work you have done has not gone un-noticed.
Marc seems to have a lot to offer as do you in terms of computer talk and tech.
As for me I like the way the new layout looks.
Looking forwards to the continuing improvements.

    Good job.
There is quite a bit of work to updating vbulletin styles and templates. The overall layout is still a work in progress. Right now I am currently rewriting the css for the top menu so it does not interfere with vb's css. So with that in mind, thinks may be a bit quirky for a little bit.

I have spoke with Marc a few times via PM, and I believe we are just about on the the same wave length in regards to upping the security here. Older versions of vb are very exploitable as we have seen with all the spambot activity. That will be resolved very soon!

I'm glad everyone likes the new look! I have to say I did in fact use my TY RooR for a bit of inspiration, kinda went with it with the colors off of that. With a good buzz of course

If anyone one experiences major problems, please let me kn ow in a PM. As far as the minor issues(some things are a bit off due to the header css conflicting with vb's css right now), I am working to resolve that asap! I hope to have the actual final layout completed within the next week.

Hopefully, lightly_toasted's hard work to improve your board's appearance, extra 'bells and whistles' and security will encourage you to participate and post much more on your own board Marco - instead of somewhere else.

A board Admin has to work real hard to make his or her board successful..all the time, and when health permits.

Don't always depend on others to do this for you, because you will not succeed.

If you want to copy many important topics on the MedPot.net Forums and post it on TY, be my guest, but please add our board's links.

In this way, it could help both boards.

    Good luck!

    Marc

Actually something like affiliated sites somewhere on the forum might be an novel idea. Have a list of sites that TY acknowleges and respects within the medical community.

    Just a thought,

Cute idea, but not efficient, as it has been tried before.

If Marco isn't convinced that he'll have to work hard to make his board successful once more, then, even if you succeed in installing the best and most secure board version for TY, it will not matter...not much anyway.

Hopefully, you are not wasting your FREE time LT.

Marco is VERY lucky to have you.

I would need to pay lots of $$$ for these services.

Well even if he don't put in the time, TY can still comeback. I don't want to speak for him but I think he just has too many pots on the burner so to speak. But there needs to be someone else that is an admin and has a presence on the forum. Forum admin is a full time job in itself. Especially on a large forum.

If I was approached with some sort of compensation, I would have no problems handling day to day operations as well as supporting server issues remotely in a full time manner. I have helped out at other sites without asking anything in return. But when I am only donating my time, I try to limit the amount of time a day I spend on a project so I don't have to rush my projects that are paying.

I have also done work on several other forums like I have begun here at TY, and I can honestly tell you that this kind of work isn't cheap at all, there are many hours of reading code, manipulating it and then testing it across multiple browsers, etc. Because I am doing this pro bono, I don't have the support of the people I normally work with when I rework a site. They like to get paid, lol! Granted my good friend Ironmaiden7000 who just signed up here has already offered his assistance for a new feature that will be added soon. That I will run by Marco soon.

So I have been doing live, on the fly updates to the templates vs running it on a development server. I do have a development server that is a complete copy of TY as of the last db dump I ran a few days ago. But I am only using that to rebuild the 3.x db to a new 3.8.7 db. That is why I have posted threads for feedback and bugs. Essentially I am making the community be my testers

Yeah, I am still working out the bugs on using a phpinclude plugin I made to run the php header. I had to modify some of the PHP code to get it to function, so I will be correcting the links ASAP. The home button will actually become TY Magazine Home for the forums after I finish. Eventually I will get it all pulled together!

The css still wants to take over the actual forum css, even setting the attributes in the header css to only modify the header and it still takes over vb's css. I'm sure it's something silly that my stoned ass is overlooking, lol!!! Soon as I get it fully functional, the forum text color will revert to black with green highlight for links and all the forms should go back to normal. Needless to say, css is a bit of a weak point for me, lol.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, it really makes tracking down issues a lot easier for me.

Please keep me posted on forum issues! If you come across something you think I may have overlooked, please let me know here - The Bug Report. I will start a list of issues and mark them as corrected as I find solutions.

Lots of time spent on Mark Zuckerberg's 'burner' - instead of here.

That would be unlikely, because Marco would have done so a long time ago if the expense would have been justifiable.

Keep on the good work lightly_toasted!

LOL Marc you have NO CLUE what I do with all my time! When you start PAYING me a wage then you can dictate to me how much time I spend and where. Sorry Marc but I am extremely busy and I choose to spend my STRESS TIME on FB playing games. When we get the games all set up here at TY you will see me here playing games to help me cope with my daily STRESS.

Maybe if you spent a day in my shoes you wouldn't be so critical! My plate is over flowing and it's my own fault but I have to find ways and means to make ends meet plain and simple. I DON'T collect money from the government on a monthly basis!
